I grew up in the country and spent my happiest hours in the woods near our home. Then I met my neighbour up the road and fell in love with her. Her father was a renowned bird watcher and to endear myself to her family, I became interested in birds. I married his daughter in 1968.
Then in university in 1969, we got involved with Pollution Probe, one of Canada’s first environmental organizations. Probe fed our interest in the natural world.
In 1972, we moved to Yukon to start a school. It was there that nature grabbed me by the throat and I have been hooked ever since.
After Yukon, I spent many years working for WWF in Canada and abroad, and I also spent 30 years on and off the board of Long Point Bird Observatory, Bird Studies Canada and Birds Canada.
I’m still in love with the forest and we live on the edge of Happy Valley Forrest and the Love Mountain Nature Reserve near Nobleton in York Region.
